Smart Motion Robotics, Inc. Announces a new SmartChek™ vision based dirt detection system for SmartPacker™, the Egg Industry’s Leading Robotic Egg Case Packing Solution
Gilberts, Illinois, August 15, 2009 – A new vision based dirt detection system for SmartPacker™ is now available. The SmartChek™ system delivers a whopping dirt and manure detection capability for egg producers. The new system can pick up even minute particles of dirt or manure on eggs packed in flats, prior to packing in cases, giving the egg producer a second line of defense against dirt or manure getting packed - therefore supplementing the dirt detection system of the grader
The system uses the FANUC Visloc™ camera and R-30i/A controller, and is capable of being installed on existing SmartPackers. The system uses 2 cameras and lights, and checks the eggs in the flat just prior to the robot picking. If dirt or manure is detected, the system signals an operator via a stacklight, siren, and a proximity light located above the in-feed where the detection occured, so an operator can quickly identify and replace the defective egg, minimizing the downtime for egg replacement.
The system gives the egg producer another check of dirt detection prior to the packing if eggs. This new capability makes the SmartPacker™ even more versatile.
SmartPacker™ reduces packing labor costs up to 83% by automating the labor-intensive process at the back of the grader. Foam and pulp consumer cartons are carefully placed into shipping cases, significantly reducing the number of post-cartoning chex. The robots do not get tired, get sick or quit after being trained.
The SmartPacker™ uses, as its core, a world-class FANUC robot complemented by application specific automation components. It provides a reliable, cost effective solution for a common industry problem – manual egg case packing. SmartPacker™ operates on two grader lanes at one time and its software features resilient operation in case of a lane failure, such as a carton lid pop-open. The system places center dividers into 24 and 30 dozen un-taped cases. The system also packs consumer cartons into 15 dozen cases to 30 dozen cases as well. A single operator can tend multiple systems, feeding empty cases into several lanes. As a standard feature, statistics and real time monitoring can be accessed through the plant’s internal local area network (LAN) or directly on each SmartPacker™ system.
The company was recently featured on Heartbeat of America’s limited television series “Keeping America Strong” with special performances by William Shatner and retired US Navy Rear Admiral Kevin Delaney. The company was presented with the “Keeping America Strong” award on the show.
